Nguyen Xuan Khanh is one of the renowned authors of contemporary Vietnamese prose. His works includes Hồ Quý Ly ( a biography ), Goddess of the Highlands (Mẫu thượng ngàn), and Heading towards the pagoda with rice (Đội gạo lên chùa) which significantly examined topics regarding strong points of national culture in the flow of the history in special periods. Based on the theory of ancient samples, this article analyses the sample of Ong Dung and Ba Da in Goddess of the Highlands and argues that the legend of Ong Dung - Ba Da exists not only in the "ancient paradigms" of the spiritual life and folk tales but also in modern life, involving social events, the lives and the fates of the characters. In addition, the content also depicts characters’ destiny and social events, and these purpose to make French colonist to confure, worry and panic.. By employing the ancient style of Mr. Dung and Ms. Da, Nguyen Xuan Khanh has eloquently re-affirmed the immortal vitality and power of Vietnamese culture.
