Abstract

This paper explores the significance and potential of fog computing, an emerging paradigm that extends cloud computing to the network edge. The objective is to provide a comprehensive analysis of fog computing by examining its meaning, historical context, potential applications, technical challenges, and relationship with cloud computing. The study reveals that fog computing aims to optimize latency, bandwidth usage, and resource utilization by bringing data processing and storage closer to the data source. It introduces categories such as Storage in Fog (StiF), Web in Fog (WiF), and Infrastructure as Fog (IaF), each with unique characteristics aligned with fog computing principles. The paper highlights the importance of addressing technical challenges in hardware, operating systems, networks, databases, and browsers/servers to fully realize fog computing's potential. Additionally, it establishes fog computing as a complementary component to cloud computing, filling the gaps and unlocking the full potential of cloud computing by catering to on-premises computer systems. The paper also identifies future research directions in fog computing, including fog-cloud collaboration, service scalability, fog scalability, fog-based dedicated applications, mobile fog computing, fog federation, energy consumption and communication efficiency tradeoff, duration of local data storage, storage and communication security, and semantic-aware fog computing. Addressing these research directions will pave the way for innovative applications and advancements in fog computing, enabling efficient and intelligent edge computing solutions in various domains.
